The Arizona State Transportation Board announced the approval of its 2027-2031 Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction program emphasizing pavement and bridge improvements.
The $11.3 billion plan encompasses areas beyond Maricopa and Pima counties, by improving highway pavement, expanding several highways and improving bridge infrastructure. The board said the projects will improve highway safety, efficiency and functionality in areas like intersection improvements, updates to rest areas and ports of entry, implementation of smart technologies and the addition of new signals, signs and shoulders.
The plan features several capacity increasing or expansion projects, including widening SR 260 east of Payson, known as the Lion Springs segment, widening US 93 at Big Jim Wash between Wickenburg and Wikieup, constructing the James Ranch Road between SR 80, and the new Douglas Land Port of Entry; and improving I-17 from Dugas Road at milepost 269 to milepost 275.
The plan also lists projects planned for Maricopa County in conjunction with the Maricopa Association of Governments, and includes projects for Pima County listed with in conjunction with the Pima Association of Governments. Thos projects include the beginning of construction of the center segment of SR 30, as well widening I-10 from Alvernon Way to Valencia Road and building ramps for the connection of future SR 210 to I-10.
Officials said the plan also includes $186.1 million for the Airport Capital Improvement Program for projects to design and construct safety, security, and capacity enhancements, and to fund improvements at the Grand Canyon Airport, which ADOT operates.
