Pennsylvania will invest $25 million to develop EV chargers in the western part of the commonwealth, Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office announced recently.
Part of the Community Charging phase of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, the investment will further the state’s role as a leader in the NEVI program, officials said. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), since the first Pennsylvania NEVI station opened in December 2023, NEVI-funded charging stations in Pennsylvania have supported more than 106,000 charging sessions, and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 2,700 metric tons.
“The most critical element when considering an EV is knowing where you can charge it,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, we’re directing investments to new chargers in communities that need them and improving EV accessibility for everyone.”
The recent funding announcement builds on nearly $62 million already committed to the NEVI program. Pennsylvania leads the country in EV charging stations built using NEVI funds with 37. Another 55 stations are in various stages of planning and construction, PennDOT said.
“As we bring more EV infrastructure to commercial districts and community facilities across our region, we will also bring an increasing number of EV owners to our communities,” Rich Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Southwest Pennsylvania Commission, said. “SPC is grateful to PennDOT and the federal government for allowing us to partner on this latest round of funding.”
The Western Region includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Warren, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Additional funding opportunities are expected to open, including East (PennDOT Districts 8, 5 and parts of 4) and Central (PennDOT Districts 9, 2, 3, and parts of 10 and 4) in August thru September 2026.
