Indiana Gov. Mike Braun extended the Braun Gas Tax Holiday on Wednesday for a second time.
Braun first announced a 30-day Gasoline Usage Tax suspension on April 8. He extended the tax holiday on May 6 and added a suspension of the Gasoline Excise Tax. The current extension was scheduled to expire June 7. The new expiration date is July 7.
The state’s Gasoline Usage Tax is 7 percent and would have been $0.265 per gallon for June.
“Indiana has the cheapest gas in the country because we are using every tool in the toolbox to save Hoosier families money,” Braun said. “Affordability is my number one priority.”
Indiana has the least expensive gas in the country, at $3.585 for a gallon of regular, according to a AAA ranking of gas prices by state.
The Indiana General Assembly limited a governor’s emergency powers during a statewide disaster declaration to 60 days, but Indiana law treats energy emergencies and disaster declarations as separate authorities.
Braun declared an energy emergency in April that has not been rescinded. Current law allows a governor to continue an energy emergency and related relief within the 120-day maximum period without calling a special session of the General Assembly.
