Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said her state had awarded more than $7.6 million in transportation infrastructure grants to cities and counties across the state for more than 25 road projects.
The grants are the first round of funding from the Alabama Department of Transportation’s Annual Grant Program, created by the Rebuild Alabama Act. That legislation signed by the governor in 2019 requires ALDOT to establish and annual program setting aside at least $10 million off the top of the state’s share of gas tax revenue and use it on local projects.
“If you are driving from one place to the next in our state, it is hard not to spot a blue Rebuild Alabama sign along the way. That is because we have road and bridge projects happening in all 67 counties,” Ivey said. “These grants are giving our local communities the support they need to take on critical projects. We are going to keep delivering results you can see mile after mile across our state.”
This year’s annual grant program will award $15 million in state fuds, an increase of $5 million over what is required by the legislation. Additional funding will be announced later this year, the governor said.
Cities and counties awarded grant funding contributed more than $1.9 million in local matching funds. All of the projects that won awards are required to move forward within one year.
