The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recently awarded counties and municipalities statewide $117.56 million in 2026 General Transportation, Connecting Highway, and Expressway Policing Aids. The second quarterly payments are used to repair, maintain and improve local roads and connecting highways.

Payments included $4.3 million in Connecting Highway Aids to 116 municipalities, $4.8 million in Expressway Policing Aids to Milwaukee County and $108.5 million in General Transportation Aids to local governments.

Connecting Highway Aids reimburses municipalities for the maintenance and traffic control of certain state highways. Expressway Policing Aids help the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office patrol expressways in the county. General Transportation Aids help cover the costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating roads and streets under local jurisdiction.

“Investment in Wisconsin’s local roads is an investment in safety, connectivity, and quality of life across our state,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “Whether you’re from Ashland in northwest Wisconsin, Cudahy in the southeast, or any number of communities in between, this funding is reaching your area and making a real difference.”

Funding is through the 2025-27 Biennial Budget that became law last year. The law invests $1.1 billion in the state’s transportation infrastructure and increases funding for the General Transportation Aids program by three percent for each year of the biennium.
