Japan-based Hitachi Rail is investing approximately $21.9 million in a new Canadian headquarters in Toronto that will open this summer.
The 125,000-square-foot office is located on 5.5 floors in Consilium Place in Toronto’s Scarborough district and will accommodate 1,100 employees and 100 paid interns. The LEED Silver and BOMA-certified building will feature a gym, a daycare and electric vehicle charging stations. It also will feature the Global Communications-Based Train Control Competence Centre.
“This new headquarters will strengthen our local economy, create meaningful jobs and opportunities for young people, and position Ontario at the forefront of next-generation rail innovation,” Andrea Hazell, MPP Scarborough—Guildwood Rail Technology Leadership in Toronto, said. “Scarborough has waited a long time for real transit progress, and investments like this show what’s possible when global partners choose to build, hire, and grow locally.”
Hitachi Rail has invested $73 million to develop SelTrac G9, a rail signaling technology, in the new office.
The company’s SelTrac CBTC technology is being developed in Toronto and will integrate artificial intelligence and fifth generation cellular network technology to deliver smarter, more efficient and more sustainable subway systems. This will lower operating costs for transit operators, improve reliability, and increase capacity.
