The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) recently awarded 103 local projects $119 million in Flexible Transportation Fund (Flex Fund) grants.

The Flex Fund complements the Federal Aid Highway program and supports the state’s interconnected transportation system. The 69th Legislative Assembly provided an estimated $230 million to the Flex Fund for improvements to transportation infrastructure on and off the state highway system. Townships, cities and counties are eligible.

“The Flex Fund allows us to make smart investments in North Dakota’s infrastructure to improve the safety and efficiency of our transportation system,” Gov. Kelly Armstrong said. “These investments are critically important to reduce long-term maintenance and operating costs.”

The programs within the Flex Fund are reimbursement-only programs.

The Grants for Bridges program reimburses counties for the repair, replacement, or removal of bridges. The goal is to improve the safety, connectivity, and longevity of the existing transportation network.

Prairie Dog as Grants program provides grants to cities, non-oil counties, and non-oil townships for roads and bridges.

The Grants for Non-Oil Townships program reimburses non-oil townships for transportation related projects.

The Grants for Non-Oil Counties and Cities program reimburses non-oil counties and cities for transportation related projects.

NDDOT received 674 applications totaling more than $560 million in requested project costs.
