The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) recently issued an update on the I-70 Floyd Hill Project.
Construction began in 2023 to improve eight miles of I-70 from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs. Improvements include adding a third westbound lane, constructing a missing two-mile section of the frontage road, improving sight distance on roadway curves, improving traffic flow and access at interchanges and intersections, and building an eastbound I-70 extended on-ramp for slow-moving vehicles.
Since construction began, crews have completed three miles between County Road 65 and the middle of Floyd Hill. The new alignment allows for the planned eastbound I-70 extended on-ramp and a future westbound I-70 Express Lane, and two free general purpose westbound lanes.
“We’ll be building a modern, safer highway while keeping this vital corridor moving,” CDOT I-70 Floyd Hill Project Director Kurt Kionka said. “We understand the challenges construction brings to the local community, businesses and motorists traveling through the area. But we know this work will deliver benefits that both save and improve lives.”
The new alignment will be completed in 2028, and the entire project will conclude in 2029. Rock scaling and blasting will continue through 2026. Crews have completed 135 blasts, removing more than 600,000 tons of material.
