The Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a $141 million project to rebuild approximately three miles of I-475 in Genesee County from the Flint River to Carpenter Road. The project was funded through the Rebuilding Michigan program.
Work began on the northbound lanes in April 2024, on the southbound lanes in December 2024, and the roadway reopened to traffic on Sept. 29, 2025. Nineteen structures along the corridor were repaired, and the northbound and southbound lanes were rebuilt. The stretch of I-475 carries more than 36,000 vehicles daily.
“When we fix a freeway, when we repair a road, we make the community safer,” Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II said at the ceremony that was held on the Russel Avenue Bridge over I-475. “We enable more economic possibility, activity, and opportunity. Michigan is going to continue to move and drive forward and this project represents that here in Mid-Michigan.”
In spring 2026, work will begin on a $270 million project to rebuild the middle and south segments of I-475 from the Flint River to Bristol Road.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is responsible for nearly 10,000-mile state highway system, comprising all state, interstate and US-routes.
