The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) said work has been completed on I-475 from the Flint River to Carpenter Road in Flint following a $141 million rebuilding project.

The work on I-475 included rebuilding the roadway, building a new bridge over the Flint River and making improvements to several other structures along the corridor, officials said. The freeway reopened to traffic on Sept. 29.

“This major project will help extend the life of the roadway for years to come,” Paul Schiefer, MDOT project engineer, said. “The work done on this important corridor will improve safety while right-sizing and modernizing our infrastructure to meet current traffic volumes and needs.”

Even though the road is open, a traffic shift will be in place on northbound I-475 to allow crews to finish final work items, the department said. Those items include sealing the barrier walls, painting the bridge and applying concrete surface coatings. The work could require intermittent northbound lane closures and traffic shifts to address the remaining work to the roadway, officials said.

Work on a $270 million investment to rebuild the middle and south segments of I-475 from the Flint River to Bristol Road is expected to begin in spring 2026, officials said.

Funding for the road came from the Rebuilding Michigan program implemented by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to rebuild state highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy.
