With nearly $10 million invested in infrastructure, Union Pacific said its investments are expanding intermodal capacity to deliver time-sensitive freight faster in Southern California.
The investments across the railroad’s 23-state network are enhancing infrastructure, technology and network reach to deliver services, the railroad said. The most recent upgrades span nine miles of main line track from Bon View to South Fontana, CA, where engineering teams installed double track, rebuilt two bridges and a culvert, and reinforced sidings. Those upgrades will allow more trains to move through the area and improve the company’s network connectivity.
“Adding track increased velocity and network fluidity for freight entering Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal,” Paul Ivey, senior manager-Track and Civil Construction at Union Pacific, said. “It’s a key part of Union Pacific’s intermodal facilities expansion plan in the LA area.”
Southern California’s Los Angeles Basin is a vital hub for international intermodal traffic, the company said. It’s five intermodal ramps are strategically located throughout the regions, positioning the company to provide customers with fast and reliable access to domestic and international markets.
Additionally, a recently launched truck-competitive domestic intermodal service connecting Southern California’s Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal to Chicago’s Global 2 Intermodal Terminal, give customers a 20 percent faster service time compared to current industry offerings between the same locations.
“By delivering consistent service for our customers, we’re encouraging continued growth in the region,” David Pratt, senior manager-Resource Planning, said.
