The Mackinac Bridge’s operation, tourism and events contributes $193 million annually to Michigan’s economy in direct, indirect and induced spending, according to an economic impact study, and supports 1,449 jobs.

“We’ve always known that the operation of the Mackinac Bridge, as well as special events including the Annual Bridge Walk, have had a significant impact on the local communities and beyond,” William Milliken, Mackinac Bridge Authority vice chairman, said. “We’re so pleased to see this study confirms and validates the positive impact it has for businesses and local governments.”

The Annual Bridge Walk stimulated $3 million in spending statewide in 2024. A total of $2.4 million was spent in neighboring counties. There were nearly 33,000 participants, and $250,000 in state and local taxes was generated.

For every $1 in tolls paid at the bridge, $7.27 was generated in spending in Michigan. An economic impact of $161.6 million was concentrated in Mackinac, Emmet and Cheboygan counties.

Other findings include:

Participants in the Annual Bridge Walk who made it an overnight trip, nearly 50 percent of survey respondents, spent $224.93 on average for food and beverages, lodging, transportation, shopping, and other recreation.

Nearly 66 percent of area businesses were positively affected.

Public Sector Consultants conducted the study.
