The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) delivered more than $1 billion transportation related projects during federal fiscal year 2024.
Projects included more than $300 million in federally funded aviation projects, and more than $650 million in federally funded highways projects.
“Overall, as in previous years, we obligated every federal dollar available to us on transportation projects” Dom Pannone, Alaska DOT&PF Program Management and Administration director, said. “Our team successfully obligated $662 million in federal highways dollars alone, despite the fact that the August redistribution amount approved by FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) was lower than recent years.”
The agency also recently announced that Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Amendment #1’s partial approval was received. Five railbelt projects and 18 rural projects were excluded. Exclusion does not mean projects will not move forward, but that state and local sponsors received clarification when directions from the federal government were not clear.
It is becoming increasingly common for the FHWA to communicate expectations to Alaska’s STIP team in writing to codify new expectations.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities oversees nine ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, 237 airports, 839 public facilities, and more than 5,600 miles of highway.
