The Port of Benton in Richland, Wash., recently completed its sixth rail crossing replacement project on State Route 240.

The project began on May 29 and completed June 1, 12 hours ahead of schedule. Work included the replacement of the entire crossing and the installation of cantilevers, concrete panels, pavement, a signal cabinet, and new track and ties.

“Port of Benton’s rail line is vital for our region’s industries, and the funding support secured by (state) Sen. (Matt) Boehnke (R-Benton) was pivotal for this construction project,” Diahann Howard, port executive director, said. “We’re grateful to have the strong support of our state and federal representatives, as our rail line moves 1.3 million tons of freight each year for our farmers, ag producers and other small and big businesses.”

The port previously replaced rail crossings at Airport Way, Kingsgate Way, Swift Blvd/Cemetry Drive, State Route 224/Van Giesen, and Saint Street. Crews installed approximately 3,400 new ties and new ballast.

Future projects include the final crossing project on the White Bluffs Southern Connection Rail Line and returning Class 2 track speeds up to 25 mph.

The National Highway Freight Program via the Washington State Department of Transportation awarded the State Route 240 crossing project a $865,000 grant.
