On Thursday, the City of Albuquerque’s Sustainability Office launch the Affordable Mobility Platform (AMP), an electric vehicle carshare pilot project.

Working with partners Forth, PNM and Sol Housing, the city launched the project at PAH! Highland Plaza apartment community. The project is the first site in the southwest region in a national community Electric Vehicle (EV) carsharing program. The project will provide affordable mobility solutions for low-income residents.

“We’re keeping equity in the driver’s seat and providing our communities with access to sustainable transportation options,” Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said. “By ensuring everyone has access to the benefits of clean transportation, we’re paving the way for a more inclusive and environmentally conscious future that doesn’t leave our historic neighborhoods behind.”

The project will utilize an online reservation system called MDO carshare, which will allow residents, staff and community members to sign up and rent one of two vehicles stationed at Hiland Plaza. Trips are available at $5 per hour, or $50 per day. Low-income users will qualify for discounted rates, officials said.

“This EV carshare program is an important win for our community,” Albert Lee, Sustainable Transportation Specialist at the City of Albuquerque, said. “It advances our commitment to equitable climate action, by reducing our carbon footprint, improving air quality, and helping frontline communities access clean transportation in Albuquerque.”

The project is the first AMP site in the southwest and joins other carshare communities launching in Santa Fe and Las Vegas.

“This unique program is helping us reach our city’s climate goals, while improving public health in this frontline neighborhood, and also saving folks money,” Albuquerque City Councilmember Tammy Fiebelkorn said. “I’m so proud to see this kind of equity-based program starting here in our community.”
