Amtrak recently selected the construction manager at risk contractor for the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge project.
Flatiron/Herzog Joint Venture will build two bridges and do any associated track work.
Amtrak also awarded two other contracts. An AECOM-led team was awarded a project and construction management contract to support completion of the final design and perform construction management for the bridge construction phase. Fay Construction was awarded a contract to demolish and remove 10 remnant piers.
“With the award of these contracts, we are one step closer to breaking ground on this crucial project that will unlock a significant bottleneck on the Northeast Corridor, reduce trip times and improve reliability for passenger and freight travel across the northeast,” Laura Mason, Amtrak executive vice president of capital delivery, said.
The existing 117-year-old Susquehanna River Rail Bridge is the longest moveable bridge on the Northeast Corridor and supports more than 110 passenger and freight trains daily. Amtrak, Maryland Area Regional Commuter rail and Norfolk Southern use the bridge. Traffic is limited to a speed of 90 mph which has resulted in capacity and reliability constraints.
Design work is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 with construction scheduled to begin in 2025.
