Construction begins on Hudson Tunnel Project

Amtrak and the Gateway Development Commission (GDC) recently celebrated the start of construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project in New York and the final phase of the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project.

The became eligible for $6.88 billion in federal grants when it entered the engineering phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grants Program.

Construction on the Hudson Tunnel Project in New Jersey will begin soon. The project recently was given a “Notice to Proceed” on the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge and Utility Relocation project.

Five of nine contemplated Hudson Tunnel Project contracts are either in the procurement or construction phases.

The Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project involves rail right-of-way preservation ahead of the Hudson Tunnel Project’s full construction. The first two sections are complete, and the third phase is expected to be complete in summer 2026. The phase will connect with the new Hudson River Tunnel, giving trains access to New York Penn Station.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing – Section 3 project $292 million in Mega Grant Program funding.

The ceremony was attended by Amtrak and GDC officials, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, and U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Charles Schumer (D-NY).
