Work is underway at the Albany International Airport on a $100 million revitalization project.

The project will support the expansion of the airport’s terminal to provide more passenger amenities and more efficient passenger flow through security. The more than 25-year-old terminal handles more than 1 million passengers annually and experiences space limitations.

The project will revitalize the airline ticketing, baggage claim, and concession areas; relocate and expand the existing security checkpoint and passenger recompositing areas; and remove an existing rotunda and pedestrian bridge to construct a new main entrance.

In addition, conference facilities will be updated, new green spaces will be added, a multi-sensory calming room will be installed, the airside marketplace will be expanded, and a public arts area and children’s play zone will be created.

Work includes upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; expanding the landside connector between the airport and the parking garage; and the installation of a 30 kilowatt solar array installation on the roof and a new energy-efficient LED lighting system.

The project received $60 million from the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.

The awards are intended to promote, revitalize and accelerate investments in upstate commercial passenger service airports.

Nine upstate airports were awarded $230 million.
