The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is seeking proposals from private developers for a transit center on Dorrance Street in downtown Providence.

Proposals will be for the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of the center through a progressive joint development project delivery model. The new transit center will be a mixed-use development project that includes an enclosed intermodal transit center, RIPTA administrative offices, and retail and residential housing.

The center will serve as RIPTA’s central bus depot. It will feature accommodations for bicyclists and a temperature-controlled passenger arrival and seating area. The design also may incorporate a public meeting space with an open-air terrace and other amenities that serve the community.

“We are excited to move ahead with a state-of-the-art transit center that will benefit our passengers, the environment, and our economy,” Scott Avedisian, RIPTA CEO, said. “This progressive (proposal) model will allow us to tap into the expertise of industry experts to develop a world-class transit center to accommodate a growing transit system while also maximizing the opportunity for community input regarding the project.”

Proposals will be accepted between Jan. 17 and April 17, with the winning bid selected in the spring. This will be followed by public dialogue and input with the selected partner.
