The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) recently released its Enhanced Resurfacing Program designed to reduce potholes and road deterioration during the winter months.

“This has been one of the worst years we’ve seen for potholes,” TDOT Interim Commissioner Joe Galbato said. “It’s what we call a perfect storm with the extreme winter weather, regular wear and tear, and pavement coincidentally at the end of its life. We want everyone to know we’re taking steps to prevent this in the future.”

The past winter’s wet conditions accelerated pavement deterioration in several locations. TDOT conducted analysis of state routes and determined locations in the center of the state that will not make it through another winter.

These routes include Briley Parkway in Davidson County, I-40 in Davidson County, I-40 in Wilson County, I-40 in Smith County, I-24 in Rutherford County, I-24 in Rutherford and Bedford counties, I-65 in Robertson County, I-65 in Maury County, and I-40 in Cheatham County.

The Enhanced Resurfacing Program will be in addition to regularly scheduled resurfacing projects and maintenance of patching potholes statewide.

“We are going to deal with potholes every year,” TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges said. “But repaving these roads earlier than originally planned should prevent deterioration as we saw this past winter.”
