The Port of Los Angeles is seeking proposals from trucking company and truck manufacturer teams to demonstrate zero-emissions short-haul drayage trucks. A total of $3 million in grant funding is available, and the port will reward up to $300,000 per truck toward the cost of 10 zero-emissions trucks and related infrastructure.

Teams must be comprised of at least one licensed motor carrier and one heavy-duty truck original equipment manufacturer.

The port may award more than one proposal a grant. The grants are subject to approval by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners.

The pilot project will test the capabilities of current model zero-emissions drayage trucks in port operations within a radius of approximately 25 miles or less. The goal is to help achieve the San Pedro Bay ports’ climate goals established in the 2017 Clean Air Action Plan Update. The update includes transitioning the port complex’s full drayage fleet to zero-emissions trucks by 2035.

“This project represents the first in a series of financial incentives we will offer to accelerate the deployment of zero-emissions trucks,” Gene Seroka, port executive director, said. “We’re eager to do our part and work with other public agencies and the trucking industry to expedite the turnover of the fleet.”

The proposal deadline is Jan. 4.
