The South Dakota Transportation Commission recently approved more than $36 million in funding to help maintain, preserve, repair, or reconstruct bridges and roads.

A total of $27.5 million will be awarded in state funds, while the remainder will be used to reimburse federal aid projects. The total also includes $6 million Congress provided the state under the December 2020 CRRSA supplement appropriations bill.

State highway funding was provided to every county and community with a population of more than 5,000.

The commission also recently approved $21.4 million for the Local Federal Bridge Program and $15 million for Bridge Improvement Grants.

“Through the efforts of the transportation commission, much-needed funds will again be provided to our county and city partners to invest for local priorities,” Joel Jundt, interim transportation secretary, said. “Although there is not a law requiring allocation of these funds to local governmental entities, the Commission has consistently recognized the interconnection of transportation systems, regardless of ownership, and the need for local control of investments.”

Last year, the commission approved more than $86 million in transportation funding to local governments in the form of federal aid, state funding and grants.

Counties and cities receive an annual allocation of transportation funding in the form of state funding.
