The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) applauded the introduction of legislation designed to coordinate the federal government’s response to advanced air mobility.

On Friday, U.S. Reps Sharice Davids (D-KS) and Garret Graves (R-LA) introduced the Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act. The legislation would build a framework around the introduction of electric aircraft into the national airspace.

“Advanced Air Mobility is an emerging sector of the aviation industry which has the potential to facilitate new transportation options, create jobs and economic activity, advance environmental sustainability and new technologies, and support emergency preparedness and competitiveness,” GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce said. “The Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act goes well beyond the good work the FAA is doing to certify and build the operational regulatory framework to introduce electric aircraft into the national airspace system. This legislation would facilitate the Department of Transportation’s coordination of all federal departments and agencies with industry and other stakeholders to help realize the enormous potential and broad societal benefits of this rapidly developing and transformative aviation sector.”

The legislation would authorize the Secretary of Transportation to establish an interagency group that would plan for and coordinate the efforts to develop advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft. The group would review and make recommendations on the federal role in the AAM sector beyond the initial stages of certification and operations.
