Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao released the U.S. Department of Transportation’s vision for the future of transportation innovation on Thursday.
Called the Pathways to the Future of Transportation, the policy document come just one year after the department launched the Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology (NETT) Council. The new policy document is intended to serve as a roadmap for innovators of cross-modal technologies to work with the department.
“Pathways to the Future of Transportation guidance on new, cross-modal technologies will help address legitimate public concerns about safety, security and privacy without hampering innovation,” Chao said.
The document is the first step in the department’s initiative to provide a clear path for innovators of cross modal technologies as they engage with the department, and lays out the processes for innovators and stakeholders to bring their proposals and plans for emerging technologies to the department.
Chao announced the creation of the NETT Council last year to identify and resolve jurisdictional and regulatory gaps that may serve as roadblocks to developing new transportation technologies.
DOT will publish a Request for Comment on Pathways to the Future of Transportation, which will allow the public to comment and provide feedback on the document. More information on the NETT Council’s work can be found at www.transportation.gov/nettcouncil.
