The American Highway Users Alliance (AHUA) is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to continue ensuring all 75 MHz in the 5.850-5.925 GHz Band remain for transportation safety.
The organization represents motorists, RV enthusiasts, truckers, bus companies, motorcyclists, and a cross-section of businesses depending on safe and efficient highways to transport families, customers, employees, and products.
The advocacy initiative stems from a proposed FCC rule the AHUA maintains would alter the purpose of the 75 MHz at issue in this docket. Currently, all 75 MHz in the band are assigned to transportation safety purposes.
Under the proposed rule, 45 MHz of the 75 MHz would be reassigned to unlicensed purposes.
“Vehicles increasingly rely on advanced electronics that interact with other vehicles and with the surrounding environment, to improve safety and provide other societal benefits,” AHUA President and CEO Laura C. Perrotta wrote in correspondence to FCC Secretary Marlene Dortch regarding the proposed rule change. “Saving lives is a paramount objective that policymakers must prioritize above all. Failing to preserve the full 75 MHz for connected vehicle technologies will make achieving major progress towards the goal of zero fatalities on our roadways extremely difficult.”
Perrotta concluded the Commission’s proposal would reduce the spectrum available for transportation safety by even more than 45 MHz. The country must avert what the AHUA considers a reduction in safety and the other negative economic consequences that would follow from the proposed implementation.
