The Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) $2.1 billion Red and Purple Line Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project, the largest completed capital project in CTA’s history, recently reached substantial completion.
“Reaching substantial completion on this landmark project is a testament to the strength of our partnerships, the commitment of our teams, and our shared focus on delivering transformational infrastructure,” Shawn West, president of Fluor Corporation’s Infrastructure business, said. “The RPM Phase One project will have a lasting impact on Chicago’s transit system and the communities it serves. I could not be more proud of what this team has accomplished.”
Texas-based Fluor provides engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance services and lead a project team that also includes Walsh Construction.
The project has modernized and replaced slightly more than two miles of elevated track between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr since 2019 and rebuilt four stations while maintaining rail transit service. The new stations and tracks are fully open.
The project also included the installation of 11 miles of new digital track circuit signaling and the Red-Purple Bypass, an elevated bypass for the Brown Line that eliminates track conflicts and improves Red, Purple, and Brown Line service.
RPM Phase One is scheduled for completion in November.
