A total of $120.8 million in federal transportation funding has been awarded to 52 municipalities and counties in rural Indiana for local road and bridge improvements and sidewalk projects.

Funds were awarded for projects that will be bid during the fiscal year that begins July 2025. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will financially participate in the design, engineering, and right of way acquisition with the projects.

Funding supports traffic safety projects, pavement resurfacing/reconstruction projects, and Transportation Alternative Program projects such as sidewalks, ADA ramps, and trails. Funding also supports bridge rehabilitation or replacement.

Of the total, nearly $87 million was awarded for bridge projects.

Communities submitted applications last fall. To receive federal funding, they were required to meet federal requirements and contribute at least 20 percent in local matching funds.

“Indiana is making unprecedented investments in infrastructure,” Gov. Eric J. Holcomb said. “Our partnership with cities, towns, and counties to improve local roads and build new sidewalks is an important element in our bold strategy to enhance connections for all Hoosiers regardless of where they live, play, and work.”

Annually, INDOT dedicates approximately 25 percent of its federal highway funds to local projects. INDOT distributes funds outside of Metropolitan Planning Organization areas.
