The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) recently completed the $57.5 million reconstruction of the Interstate 94 and Sheyenne Street interchange.
The Sheyenne Street corridor from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W. in West Fargo was also completed.
NDDOT oversaw the interchange reconstruction while the city oversaw the street improvements.
The project added a pedestrian underpass on the south side of the Sheyenne Street and 32nd Avenue W. intersection, added additional driving lanes from north to south in West Fargo, and constructed pedestrian paths from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W.
The two-year project is intended to enhance safety for all modes of travel, improve traffic flow, upgrade underground facilities, and transform the corridor from a rural highway into an urban transportation network.
“Together, we have created an integrated system that will serve this rapidly growing area far into the future,” Bill Panos, NDDOT director, said at a ceremony celebrating the completion. “A first for North Dakota, the new I-94 interchange design is a modified single-point urban interchange that moves double lanes of Sheyenne Street traffic through one traffic light system. This kind of interchange has been proven to be 60 percent more efficient at moving traffic and safer for drivers as well as pedestrians.”
