Amtrak and Massachusetts government officials recently held a ceremony highlighting the Valley Flyer rail pilot program that will run for two years.

Service began on Aug. 30. Trains run daily in the Knowledge Corridor, the region along the Connecticut River, and make stops in Greenfield, Holyoke, Northampton, and Springfield. Valley Flyer also connects with Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor at New Haven and serves stations between Springfield and New Haven, Conn.

The project is in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Amtrak’s Vermonter train also runs along the Knowledge Corridor and connects Vermont to Washington, D.C.

“Residents of western Massachusetts are already reaping the benefits of improved rail, and I am hopeful that this pilot program will spark the continued conversation about the importance of east-west rail, as well,” Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) said.

Earlier this year, infrastructure improvements were completed in preparation for Valley Flyer service. Improvements include renovating Springfield Union Station, extending station platforms in Northampton and Greenfield, making ADA-compliant improvements where passengers board and disembark, upgrading signals at three interlockings, replacing approximately 30,000 railroad ties, and repairing culverts.

Valley Flyer passengers are permitted to use phones and electronic devices and have access to free Wi-Fi. Other amenities include a generous baggage policy and the ability to travel with small pets.
