The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently awarded 24 municipalities throughout the state more than $5 million for traffic-signal upgrades through its Green Light-Go program.
Grants reimburse communities for updates that improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals. Reimbursement can be applied to multiple improvements, including upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies, traffic signal retiming, monitoring traffic signals, and installing light-emitting diode (LED) technology.
“The safety improvements supported by the Green Light-Go program not only help municipalities relieve congestion and traffic flow, they help Pennsylvanians move safely and efficiently,” Gov. Tom Wolf said. “I’m proud to help our communities improve mobility for Pennsylvanians.”
The largest grants included: Lancaster City in Lancaster County was awarded $691,760 to update signal timing for 90 downtown traffic signals. Cheltenham Township in Montgomery County was awarded $537,138 to modernize traffic signals at two intersections. Springdale Borough in Allegheny County was awarded $430,000 to replace traffic signals at two intersections.
