The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a design-build contract to Flatiron West, Inc.-The Lane Construction Corporation Joint Venture (Flatiron/Lane) for the I-405, Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes project.

Flatiron/Lane submitted a $705 million proposal to complete the design and construction of the stretch of I-405 between Renton and Bellevue. Designs are expected to be completed this year, and construction will begin in early 2020.

“The first phase of the project, the I-405/SR 167 Interchange Direct Connector, opened to traffic in February ahead of schedule and under budget,” Kim Henry, I-405/SR 167 program administrator said. “This next phase will really be key to improving the challenges facing drivers south of I-90 and will help provide new options for commuters along the entire corridor.”

The Flatiron/Lane phase will rebuild several I-405 interchanges, build two new southbound auxiliary lanes, add infrastructure to support Sound Transit’s I-405 Stride Bus Rapid Transit system and build portions of King County’s 42-mile Eastrail.

The phase also will create a dual express toll lane system between State Route 167 in Renton and Northeast Sixth Street in Bellevue. The system will be similar to the lanes installed between Bellevue and Lynnwood.

The project will open to traffic in 2024.
