Over the next five to 15 years, the Miami International Airport will benefit from up to $5 billion for modernization projects under a capital improvement program arranged by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.

“The goal of this new capital program is for MIA to provide even greater value, convenience, and efficiency to our visitors, airline partners, and cargo operators,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.

These efforts will culminate in the redevelopment of MIA’s Central Terminal concourses E and F, an expansion of the South Terminal, renovation of Concourse D gates for a greater variety of aircraft sizes, the creation of two new hotels, as well as expanded aircraft parking positions and warehouses for cargo operations. Such efforts will, according to MIA officials, allow the facility to accommodate as many as 77 million travelers and more than 4 million tons of freight by 2040.

“I appreciate the support and leadership of Mayor Gimenez, Chairwoman Audrey Edmonson, and the Board of County Commissioners, as we turn the page to this next chapter in the transformation of MIA,” MIA Director and CEO Lester Sola said. “Because of the program’s phased structure, we look forward to delivering to our passengers and business partners new and improved airport facilities.”

The funding announcement comes on the heels of MIA’s 90th anniversary, which it celebrated last September. That same year, it crossed 45 million passengers for the first year ever, sealing its position as the busiest airport in Florida for international travelers.
