The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will begin work April 1 on the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge between Boston and Chelsea.

The work will result in lane closures that will impact traffic for both northbound and southbound drivers on U.S. Route 1. Two of the three northbound lanes will be open during daytime hours, and one lane will be open overnight.

By the end of the month, two of three north and southbound lanes will be open in the Chelsea Curves area during the day while one lane in each direction will be open overnight.

“MassDOT is carrying out simultaneous work on this infrastructure which was constructed in the middle of the 20th century and hasn’t been rehabilitated since the 1970s in order to ensure its continued use and reliability and minimize the overall impact on commuters and the local community,” Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said.

Drivers are urged to add time to their commutes, find alternate routes or take public transportation.

The work is part of a project to improve the structure of the bridge. Improvements include repaving, painting, and steel repair. The first stage of the project began during the winter of 2017-2018 and is expected to be completed in 2020.
