United Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports broke ground last week on a $352 million, 407,408-square-feet Technical Operations Center at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The center, located near United’s terminal, will connect an existing line maintenance hangar and ground service equipment and facilities maintenance building that are a mile and a half apart. The center will increase the efficiency of moving aircraft, employees, tools parts, and other supplies.

The center will support the 150 United flights that leave LAX daily by accommodating up to six narrow-body or two wide-body aircraft.

“Our continued investments emphasize our commitment to our customers in Los Angeles as California’s global airline,” United COO Greg Hart said. “This modern, world-class facility will create more than 800 jobs in L.A. during the construction process, and will be home to more than 500 United employees once it is completed. This builds on our recently completed nearly $600 million renovation to our terminal at LAX, including opening a brand-new United Polaris lounge earlier this year.”

Including the center, United has invested nearly $1 billion in LAX in recent years.

In addition, United is making investments at other airports nationwide including Tampa, Fla.; Houston, Texas; Chicago, Ill.; and Portland, Ore.
