Cooperation between public-private partnership FASTLinkDTLA and mobile ticket app provider moovel has resulted in a new rideshare service and app for Downtown Los Angeles to complement the city’s existing public transit network.

While undergoing its pilot testing, the program will come with reduced fares. Once it is running regularly, riders will pay a flat-rate fare. Discounted fares will also be offered to qualifying low-income riders. Known as FlexLA, the system will utilize Mercedes-Benz Metris passenger vans and GLC hybrid vehicles driven by salaried military veterans.

“I have supported the FASTLinkDTLA program from the very beginning of its grant application and am pleased to see this pilot moving forward,” José Huizar, Los Angeles City Councilmember, said. “DTLA needs the addition of this service, and more to follow, in order to meet the intense growth demands that make Downtown Los Angeles one of the fastest growing urban centers in the nation. That growth is achievable if we help FASTLinkDTLA accomplish its goals to incentivize people to travel together by transit, micro-transit, biking and walking.”

Specifically, FlexLA targets evening service, when traditional public transit service becomes less frequent. Riders can plan and pay for their trip by mobile and will be picked up and dropped off at designated locations, with multiple passengers.

“Many workers and residents in Downtown L.A. are left with few transportation options during the late-night hours when public transit service is less frequent,” FAST Executive Director Hilary Norton said. “FlexLA fills a gap in the city’s transportation network, offering Angelenos a safe, reliable transportation option that connects with public transit, and provides a more predictable cost than private rideshare services.”
