To help airports navigate a new drone-heavy world, Airports Council International (ACI) World released Monday a policy paper filled with information and recommendations on the issue.

The organization has no intention of resisting the drone evolution. Instead, they seek to integrate drone operations safely, securely and efficiently into existing airport operations. To do this, they have called for a risk-based approach which will be regularly updated and reviewed to keep up with rapidly changing trends and technology. Part of this also means empowering local operators and regulators to adopt procedures best suited to their area’s conditions.

The ACI paper is based on the notion that drone operations will soon surpass the number of manned aircraft operations.

“It is imperative that airport operators are aware of, and remain responsive to, the risks, challenges, and opportunities associated with new technology and new industry developments,” Angela Gittens, Director General of ACI World, said. “We have drafted this policy paper in response to the rapid development and proliferation of drones to help airports and governments prepare effective procedures and regulations to ensure continuing safe operations.”
