U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently unveiled renderings for a more than $20 billion modernization of Washington Dulles International Airport.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and United Airlines will oversee the transformation and will work with airport partners.
The project includes more than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space and will feature more efficient security check-in and screening areas, additional gates, new and modernized concourses, new AeroTrain connections and enhanced walkability, a new baggage handling system, and additional concessions and airport lounges.
“This new construction effort builds upon the multiyear Dulles Master Plan, developed in consultation with our airline partners, to modernize Washington’s main international airport,” Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter said. “We are grateful for the Trump administration’s interest in accelerating the pace and scope of our plans, and we look forward to building new facilities that will be a source of pride for our nation.”
Work will occur over several years in phases with some modernization work already underway. The first segment of the new Concourse E will open later this year. It features 14 new United Airlines gates, direct access to the airport’s AeroTrain system, and new and enhanced passenger lounges.
