Daimler recently announced that it will soon begin production of electric Mercedes-Benz EQ-branded SUV models at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama-based manufacturing facility, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI).
In addition to new electric vehicle production, a battery plant will also be built near the existing passenger-car facility which, according to Daimler, will ensure the availability of cutting-edge technology for future generations of Mercedes-Benz vehicles built in the United States.
In total, Daimler’s will invest in the region will exceed more than $1 billion, most of which is scheduled for electric vehicle development.
“With this one billion dollar investment, we are significantly growing our manufacturing footprint here in Alabama, while sending a clear message to our customers across the U.S. and around the world: Mercedes-Benz will continue to be on the cutting-edge of electric vehicle development and production,” Markus Schäfer, Divisional Board Member of Mercedes-Benz cars, said.
Daimler also announced its U.S.-based logistics activities will be expanded with a new Global Logistics Center as well as a new after-sale North American hub, which will facilitate exports of car kits to global assembly plants. However, MBUSI will continue to have production exclusivity over Mercedes’ GLE, GLE Coupé, and GLS SUV models for domestic and international customers.
“With the addition of electric SUVs to our future fleet, we will provide discerning drivers with a new, high-quality automotive option that will marry performance, luxury, and environmental stewardship,” Schäfer said.
