The Newark Regional Transportation Center (NRTC) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony on phase two of the construction of the new train station building.
Delaware Gov. John Carney and U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), as well as state and local officials, attended the ceremony.
The new station will be Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant, provide passenger amenities including restrooms and a large parking lot that will include covered parking spaces for 60 bicycles.
Funding is partially through a $10 million Transportation Investment Generating Economy Recovery IV grant from the Federal Transportation Administration.
Phase three will construct a pedestrian overpass and modify the platform and track.
“This transportation center will have an impact not just on passenger rail service to Newark, but on the economy of the entire region,” Carper said. “Now that the station is almost a reality, I look forward to the day it is up and running and attracting residents and businesses to the area.”
The station is located near the University of Delaware’s STAR campus.
Groundbreaking on phase one began in July 2017.
When the project is completed, the station will accommodate more frequent trains. It also may connect to the rail systems in suburban Philadelphia and suburban Baltimore and Washington D.C.
