The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) partnered with Ford Driving Skills for Life and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety Tuesday to host the interactive Global Youth Traffic Safety Month Summit.
The summit was held in Woodside, Delaware, and more than 100 high school students throughout the state participated. It included speakers from numerous organizations including the NTSB, Delaware police departments, youth activist groups, and the families of victims.
Teens were able to participate in Ford Driving Skills for Life’s interactive in-vehicle defensive driving course.
The Delaware Department of Education also awarded scholarships to the winners of a video contest. Videos were to share information on how to react during a traffic stop.
“‘Choices Matter’ is the mantra we repeat over and over to our young drivers and this event will encourage them to keep making choices that will keep them safe,” Jana Simpler, director of the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, said.
Car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers, according to the NTSB.
In other cities in the United States, safety organizations hosted similar summits. The intent was to inform teens about safe driving practices and encourage them to share these best practices with their peers.
