Installing quick electric vehicle rechargers throughout New York City or Westchester County can save electric vehicle (EV) developers money, according to Con Edison through an effort to better inform customers about the benefits of switching to an EV.

The utility company is cutting demand fees, the charges based on peak electric usage, by more than a third through May 2025, for developers.

To qualify, developers must make the chargers available to the general public and have an aggregate charging capacity of at least 100 kilowatts.

There are approximately 8,000 EVs registered in New York City and Westchester County. In seven years, the program could support up to 85,000 electric vehicles, according to Con Edison.

“Drivers will need places to charge all those new electric vehicles we expect to see on the streets the next few years, so we’re providing an incentive for developers to offer quick charging,” Matthew Ketschke, Con Edison’s senior vice president for Customer Energy Solutions, said. “We think supporting EVs is a great way to contribute to our region’s economy and to help the city and state meet their environmental goals.”

Con Edison also is offering customers of the company or Orange and Rockland Utilities a $3,000 rebate for buying a 2018 Nissan Leaf before July 2. Combined with federal and state tax credits, a buyer could save up to $12,500.
