New York will be making available $20 million in funding through the Airport Capital Grant Program, which will be used for projects that modernize operations, enhance airport safety, and increase general and business-related aviation capacity.

New construction, preservation projects, and other projects that enhance economic competitiveness are also eligible.

To qualify for the program, airports must be listed in the State Airport System Plan. The projects will be rated on several criteria including improving operational efficiency, adherence to regional economic development plans; and economic benefits for surrounding communities and businesses.

“New York’s airports are the front door to diverse destinations, attractions, and culture found across this great state,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “By making funding available for New York’s aviation industry, we are supporting the state’s thriving tourism sector, helping businesses expand to boost our regional economies, and ensuring our transit hubs are modernized to provide safe, reliable travel for everyone.”

The application deadline is June 29.

The grant funding is in addition to the $200 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization competition that awards projects that create a better passenger experience, enhance safety, improve operations and access, and reduce environmental impact.

The first round of the competition awarded $79.8 million to two airports, while round two awarded $73.8 million to two more projects.
