Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently published a funding notice for Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program grants.
Metropolitan planning organizations, transit agencies, state departments of transportation, local governments, and other agencies are invited to compete for $60 million in funding for technologies that improve transportation safety and efficiency.
The agencies must represent a population of more than 200,000. Academic institutions must be part of a consortium for consideration. Projects eligible for the grants bring data together from different systems, including traffic data collection and dissemination, real-time traveler information, integrated corridor management, and other intelligent transportation system technologies.
“These grants promote the use of cutting-edge technology to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion,” Acting Administrator FHWA Brandye Hendrickson said. “Innovation will improve connections between rural communities and provide all Americans with safer transportation options.”
The grants were created under the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act and are now in their third round. In 2016 and 2017, $110 million in grants was provided to 18 projects in 13 states.
Projects included California’s GoPort freight project in Alameda County, Florida Department of Transportation’s Sunstore integrated data system for travelers, Pittsburgh’s SmartPGH to connect communities to transportation, and the Virginia Port Authority’s truck reservation system.
