Nissan Motor Co. is officially ramping up the corporate race for leadership in the electric and autonomous market, announcing the M.O.V.E. to 2022 plan, which calls for 1 million electrified vehicles to be sold annually by 2022.
The full scope of their plan encompasses a great deal more than that, however. Nissan desires to build eight pure electric vehicle brands, beyond their existing LEAF model. They want to specifically target China with different brands and unleash an electric mini-vehicle specific to Japan. One new electric vehicle would also be a globetrotter, a crossover inspired by the Nissan IMx Concept. Beyond that, though, they also want to electricity new INFINITI models from 2021 onward, equip 20 models of vehicles with autonomous driving technology and reach full connectivity for all new Nissan, Infinity and Datsun models sold in key markets by 2022.
“Our product and technology strategy is dedicated to positioning Nissan to lead the automotive, technology and business evolution,” Philippe Klein, Nissan’s chief planning officer, said. “Our efforts are focused on delivering Nissan Intelligent Mobility, encompassing the three core elements of electrification, autonomous drive, connectivity and new mobility services.”
All of this includes a goal of boosting the company’s revenue by 30 percent by the end of 2022. The company expects electrified vehicles to account for 40 percent of Nissan’s sales in Japan and Europe by 2022 and 50 percent by 2025. In the United States, they expect those figures to hit between 20 and 30 percent by 2025, and in China, 35 to 40 percent.
Further, on the autonomous side of things, Nissan plans to sell 1 million ProPilot autonomous technology equipped vehicles a year by 2022. To aid this, they plan on tinkering with the system to enhance multilane driving on highways and better manage vehicle destinations. Factoring in the launch of the Alliance Connected Cloud for Nissan, INFINITI, and Datsun, the company also hopes to tap into robo-vehicle ride-hailing services, so as to provide commercial services directly to customers.
