Honeywell software expands airline wifi, networks and enhances flight analytics

Honeywell’s latest product line is changing the capabilities of flights all over the world, through both data analytics and a cheaper wifi router.

The former is based on Flight Efficiency software named GoDirect. It uses a flight data analytics platform that connects different aircraft, allowing analysis that can be used to reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs, by making data-driven decisions based on flights’ fuel usage. It integrates with systems already aboard these flights and, in turn, produces analysis reports for pilots.

As of this week, the International Airlines Group (IAG) is deploying the system across its more than 500 aircraft.

“We have a strong track record of identifying and implementing initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions,” Willie Walsh, chief executive of IAG, said. “This technology will allow our airlines to further optimize their fuel consumption by analyzing aircraft performance and sharing best practice across the group.”

The new router, on the other hand, is an update on an old system. It’s approximately half the size and weight, and a mere one-third of the price of comparable products and contains threat detection measures. Like the analytics platform, it also allows connectivity and can utilize in-flight wireless connection for any network.

“Think of it like using a brand new tablet instead of a 15-year-old laptop,” John Peterson, senior director of Connectivity Services for Honeywell Aerospace, said. “The new GoDirect Router design is smaller and lighter weight, making it easier to install almost anywhere in the plane. That makes it more accessible for all kinds of aircraft. Just as important, it provides the capabilities pilots, owners and operators need to enable the Connected Aircraft. It gives them access to all kinds of unique data and services that increase safety while saving time and money.”

Honeywell contends the router can generally be installed in less than an hour, and just about anywhere in a plane.
