The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) recently received two grants totaling $257,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The funds will be used to modernize and improve the consistency of the procedures used to collect and report crash analysis data.
The largest grant, $225,000, will be used for aligning the state’s law enforcement agencies’ software with the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (MMUCC). MMUCC is the national standard for motor vehicle crash reporting.
The second grant, $32,000, will be used to convert Fatal Analysis Reporting System data tables into computer language that is easier to search and analyze. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s data tables are time-consuming and difficult to interpret, Georgia DOT said.
“We are very thankful to have been provided the funds to update these two initiatives in an effort to improve the quality and accuracy of the data we are using,” Brian Vann, data manager and crash analyst with the Georgia DOT, said. “The ability to more easily and quickly manipulate and interpret the data provided by our state’s law enforcement agencies means we can provide a more timely and accurate depiction of fatalities in Georgia, allowing the department to better tailor our efforts towards zero deaths on Georgia’s roads.”
