Since 2016, The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has been working on Project Neon–a 4 mile long widening of Interstate 15–but as of this week, they have unveiled the project’s final phase.
Nearly $1 billion have been invested into the project, which affects the road between the U.S. 95 Interchange and Sahara Avenue. For the final phase, new Interstate 15 restrictions will be put in place, U.S. Highway 95 will see closures on six separate weekends and ramps will be detoured around. Over the course of things, new freeway travel lanes will be built, along with on and off-ramps and 14 bridges.
“Project Neon will reduce travel delays by nearly 30 percent for a $110 million annual savings through increased productivity,” NDOT Senior Project Manager Dale Keller said. “It will also improve air quality due to less idle time and vehicle exhaust while enhancing motorist safety from reduced merge and weave traffic.”
Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. is the contractor running the show, with Atkins North America serving as lead designer. The project is expected for completion in summer 2019.
