The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently awarded $81.2 million in 27 transportation contracts.

More than 80 percent of the awarded funds will be used for routine maintenance.

Bridge rehabilitation contracts were made possible by Georgia’s Transportation Funding Act of 2015.

One of the bridges is the City of Social Circle’s historic district in Walton County. A new bridge will be constructed on the site of the current 64-year-old bridge over CSX Railroad. The contract was $4.25 million.

“GDOT developed the project plans and schedule with consideration and responsiveness to the community and to City input,” Adele Schirmer, Social Circle city manager, said. “We understand that the bridge replacement will be temporarily disruptive, but a significant safety and infrastructure improvement for the long term. The inclusion of period appropriate detailing on the bridge was important and we appreciate the inclusion of this element in the construction plans. We are pleased to see this project moving into construction and look forward to working with GDOT towards successful completion of this infrastructure improvement.”

The bridge is a 0.2 mile stretch of South Cherokee Road. The road will be closed 180 days for construction.

For the first seven months of fiscal year 2018, GDOT has awarded $645.7 million in contracts.
