Port Saint John handled 30,458,422 metric tonnes of cargo in 2017, marking a 15 percent year-over increase from the 26,438,301 metric tonnes handled there in 2016.
Port Saint John reported year-over gains in dry bulk of 1,185,696 metric tonnes, in liquid bulk of 2,989,807 metric tonnes, and in break bulk of 27,563 metric tonnes. Meanwhile, total containers declined by 180,944 metric tonnes and twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) declined by 32,860 metric tonnes.
Jim Quinn, president and CEO of Port Saint John, said the port’s year-over total tonnage gains were attributable to both its dry bulk stakeholders and the port’s first year of partnership with DP World, which uses multi-purpose cargo terminals on the port’s west side.
“The DP World partnership blends their global reach and influence together with our terminal modernization project to achieve the common objective of continued growth and a bright future for the Port and its supporting port service community,” Quinn said.
Allen Bodechon, the chair of the board of directors for Port Saint John, noted that the entire port community contributes to local economies across the province.
“Products from all corners of the Province are shipped to the port using New Brunswick truckers, rail, and roads,” Bodechon said. “The Port opens the global marketplace to New Brunswick producers. On behalf of our Board and the management and staff at Port Saint John we congratulate our stakeholders on a successful year.”
