The Georgia Department of Transportation recently awarded $68.7 million in 33 construction contracts for statewide transportation projects.
The contracts were for projects advertised in October with bids being placed in November.
A total of $34.2 million was awarded in resurfacing contracts as well as bridge construction and rehabilitation contracts. The remaining contracts will be used to increase road safety and upgrade traffic signals.
The largest award was $9.7 million for the 1.2-mile State Route 234 project over the Chickasawhatchee Creek in Calhoun and Dougherty counties that will replace the narrow and structurally deficient bridge and will move 234 slightly south of its current location.
The new bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes and 6.5-foot paved shoulders. A triple 9-foot by 6-foot overflow bridge culvert also will be built to minimize the environmental impact.
The project is scheduled to be completed in spring 2020.
Another large award was the $3.8 million project to construct a replacement bridge and approaches on SR 83 over the Towaliga River in Monroe County. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2019.
The Department of Transportation’s fiscal year 2018 began July 1. This month’s contracts bring the construction projects awarded this fiscal year to $477.6 million.
